Rep. Israel Calls for Passage of Transportation Bill & Much-Needed Infrastructure InvestmentMay 24, 2012 "With Memorial Day upon us and thousands of Long Islanders traveling this weekend, I'm urging my colleagues in Congress to stop the gridlock and pass a long-term transportation bill. Long Island roads, like Jericho Turnpike, are in desperate need of efficiency and safety improvements, but politics have interfered with common sense solutions. When the federal government doesn't fulfill its role, local taxpayers bear the burden." READMORE |
Reps. Israel and King Amend Defense Authorization Bill to Improve Mental Health Treatment for National Guard and ReservesMay 17, 2012 “We need to think innovatively to care for a large population of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and are now returning home. We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes that we made in Vietnam when the Veterans Administration didn’t have the resources it needed to take care of our veterans. I’m proud that Rep. King and I were able to amend the NDAA to improve mental health treatment and outreach for our returning vets by spurring partnerships between private, non-profit institutions and the Department of Defense.” READMORE |
Reps. Israel, Deutch, and Lowey Ask the GAO to Investigate Scope and Nature of U.S. Contributions to Palestinian AuthorityMay 8, 2012 When Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad created the PIF in 2002, he did so under a framework of transparency and accountability. We are concerned about reports of an increasing lack of transparency for the PIF and that Hamas has taken control of PIF assets in Gaza. We are also troubled by reports that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has stated his intent to use PIF funds to build housing for convicted terrorists responsible for killing Israeli citizens. Rep. Israel Announces Legislation to Help Working College Graduates Pay Off Student Loan DebtApril 30, 2012 "Student loan debt is holding middle-class Americans back from getting married, starting a family or buying a home. My legislation is common sense and will allow those in the workforce facing student debt to put aside money pre-tax, reducing their taxes and providing some relief from the student loans that weigh heavily on the Desmond family and so many others in our community." Rep. Israel Joins Local Moms to Announce New Legislation to Help Middle Class Families Paying for Child CareApril 20, 2012 "Cable TV hosts have been sniping at each other over which party respects moms more. Well here's something tangible we can actually do to help middle-class families. Families in our community already face the highest costs-of-living in the country, should be able to claim the full tax credit for their child care expenses, and parents should not feel like they have choose between entering or leaving the workforce to pay for childcare." VISITING THE TROOPSMay 13, 2011 Last week, as Americans and the world absorbed the news that Osama bin Laden had been brought to justice, I traveled to Iraq to visit our troops and then to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu. This was my ninth visit to join U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. READMORE |

TRAGEDY IN TUCSONJanuary 10, 2011 The violence in Tucson, Arizona -- including the shooting of my friend Rep. Gabby Giffords -- is not a time for partisanship or politics. The violence, however, does require reflection. Here are my reflections. First, I know Gabby pretty well. I was with her in New York on the day her husband, Mark Kelly, proposed to her. Mark kept telling me that Gabby would have to leave our meetings early. I kept replying that she could not. Finally, Mark told me there was no choice. The next day I learned why: He took her to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point and popped the question. Many Americans are now learning that Mark is a decorated Naval officer and space shuttle astronaut. Few know that he proposed to her on Long Island. READMORE |
